And why does it happen more to me than it does with other people?
Sterling silver jewellery is loved across New Zealand for its natural beauty and timeless appeal. But if you’ve ever wondered why your silver ring is turning black, you’re not alone. Silver tarnish and oxidisation are completely normal, and understanding why it happens helps you care for your jewellery with confidence.
One of the most common questions we’re asked in the studio is: “Why is my silver ring turning black?”
If you’ve ever noticed your silver ring turning black, darkening just a bit too much, heavy oxidisation, or black marks on your silver jewellery, don’t panic, in most cases, this is completely normal and reversible, so let’s break down what’s happening.
What Causes Silver to Turn Black?
Pure silver doesn’t actually “rust” but it does react. The silver jewellery we make is made from sterling silver that is alloyed to 92.5% silver, 7.5% Copper.
That Copper content is important as it gives silver strength, but it also makes it more reactive.
The Blackening You’re Seeing May Be Caused By Sulphur In Our Air
Silver reacts with Sulphur compounds in the air. This forms Silver Sulphide, which appears as dark grey, blue or black tarnish.
Sources of Sulphur include:
Air pollution
Wool or felt storage
Some papers and packaging
Skin Chemistry (This Is the Big One)
Silver can react differently depending on your unique body chemistry.
Factors include:
Sweat composition
Skin pH levels
Natural oils
Hormonal changes
Medications
Stress levels
Some people naturally have more acidic skin or higher Sulphur content in their perspiration. When silver reacts with this, it can tarnish much faster, sometimes within days. Others can wear the same ring for years with minimal change.
It’s not “poor quality silver”, it’s just chemistry.
Moisture & Humidity
Silver tarnishes faster in humid weather, and with frequent exposure to the following:
Water, particularly thermal pools
Soap residue
Chlorine
Cleaning products
Hand sanitiser
these all can cause oxidisation to accelerate.
Lotions, Perfume & Cosmetics
Many beauty products contain:
Sulphur compounds
Acids
Alcohol
Salt
Applying these directly before wearing jewellery can dramatically speed up tarnishing.
Why Does It Look So Dark Sometimes?
In workshop-made pieces (like our textured class rings), you’ll often see a heavier darkening inside the band.
This happens because:
The inside sits against warm skin
Sweat becomes trapped
Air circulation is limited
Natural patina builds up more quickly
The inside of the ring can oxidise significantly while the outside still looks relatively bright, and vise versa.

Is It Permanent?
No.
Tarnish is a surface reaction; it does not mean the silver is damaged.
Professional polishing techniques removes it.
At home, light tarnish can be reduced with:
A silver polishing cloth
Gentle soap and warm water
We recommend avoiding harsh DIY chemical dips, especially tips and tricks from Social media. Sometimes it can make oxidation very hard to remove due to the additional chemical treatments it has gone through. (Please do not use the tinfoil bath treatment, toothpaste, gin, sauce, etc., or whatever else the social posts might say to do!).
Why Do Some People Never Have This Problem?
There are a few reasons:
Lower skin acidity
Less perspiration
Cooler body temperature
They have fewer Sulphur compounds in their diet or environment
They wear their silver jewellery daily, as natural friction can actually slow tarnishing. Interestingly, regular wear can help keep silver brighter, because movement creates gentle friction that reduces surface build-up; potentially the ring will be rinsed and dried periodically through out your day.
Can You Prevent It?
Realistically, some people will always experience faster oxidisation and that’s completely normal.
You can however try to slow it down by:
Removing jewellery before swimming or cleaning
Avoiding contact with lotions and perfume
Storing in airtight bags when not worn. Some jewellery pouches or boxes are not suitable to store your jewellery in
Keeping your jewellery dry
Wearing your silver often

A Note to Our Workshop Participants - Silver Ring Making Class
If your class-made silver ring has darkened more than you expected, please don’t worry.
Bring it back to us we’re always happy to:
Professionally clean and polish it
Check sizing of the ring
Talk through wear and care
Your jewellery isn’t failing. It’s reacting to its environment and that’s part of wearing real and beautiful sterling silver.
The Positive Side of Tarnish
It’s worth remembering that silver has been worn for thousands of years.
Its ability to patina is part of its character. Some people love the depth and contrast the oxidisation creates, especially on hammered or textured finishes. We have many designs that benefit from being oxidised.
We’re Always Here to Help
Your piece tells a story. Sometimes that story just needs a little polish. Jewellery is meant to be worn, lived in, and loved. We’re here for the long run, just like your ring.
