Yes, you can reuse your gold to make a new ring in New Zealand. Many manufacturing jewellers, including us at the JewellersCollective+Minturn, can melt down and reuse your existing gold to create a completely new piece.

This process is often used for remodelling inherited jewellery or transforming unloved pieces into something suits your style, more modern and wearable.

Choosing recycled gold is one of the most effective ways to create ethical and sustainable jewellery, reducing the need for newly mined materials. Recycled Gold reduces environmental impact and avoids traditional mining practices entirely by reusing precious metals already in circulation.

With the volatility of the commodity markets, financial pressures increasing, and a genuine need to make greener decisions, many of our clients are requesting remodelling and custom made designs when they are looking to make a new design. Often times they have pieces of jewellery that they wish to incorporate in the make.

How Recycled Gold Is Used in Jewellery Making.

The recycling process begins by assessing your existing jewellery. This can be any precious metal that is broken, unloved, or indeed old or inherited pieces. We physically need to see what you have, and discuss with you what we can use and what we need to remove, such as gemstones, clasps and other components of your jewellery that can not be included in the melt. Reusing gold is a wonderful option however, there are a few things to consider. Not all gold alloys behave the same when melted, and in some cases we may need to add new gold to improve the strength and longevity of the final piece.

The condition of your existing jewellery, as well as the design you have in mind, will influence whether your gold can be reused directly or it will offset against the design project costs.

If you need a little more information see our Custom Made Designs and Remodelling services to learn more about these. We are based in West Auckland, we regularly work with clients to remodel and reuse gold from broken, inherited and unworn jewellery.

Melting is a controlled process using extreme temperatures

Our studio workshop is equipped to conduct small quantity melts. When conducting a melt we observe our Health and Safety procedures for best practice. This helps to ensure that the melt environment is controlled in a professional manner and conducted with goldsmithing equipment designed to reach and control extremely high temperatures.

During the melting process, impurities are removed using special refining agents so your gold is as clean and stabilised as it can be, and ready to be reused.

In some cases, we will need to add and blend in new gold to assist in strengthening the alloys and help mitigate porosity or cracking. In our workshop, when we melt gold it is poured into either a mold, a delft cast, or a button. Creating these forms allows us to go onto fabrication and handmake new pieces.

Remodelling allows ethical jewellery to respect your personal history.

When we have recycled your old gold it allows those broken, unloved and sentimental pieces to evolve rather than be discarded. Remodelling and remaking transforms your jewellery into meaningful, wearable designs while preserving their emotional value.

Recycled gold supports a circular approach to jewellery making, one that prioritises sustainability, craftsmanship, and legacy over mass production.

If you have a collection of broken, unworn, or sentimental jewellery, reusing your precious metals can be a meaningful way to create something new. You’re always welcome to visit us in the studio; we’d love to talk through your ideas and explore what’s possible.
